Sept. 10th to Sept. 17th 2011
Welcome.....
We like to describe the Tour de Kangaroo as a Fun Outback Adventure. We offer a unique experience combining a fun and sociable group of people, the fantastic scenery and challenging driving, the emphasis on savouring the outback and experiencing the hospitality of country people. Its a rewarding experience on the Tour De Kangaroo as you're raising money for the less fortunate in our society and having fun doing it.
If some of the following applies to you, then the Tour de Kangaroo could be just down your alley:
- You’ve yearned to travel around the outback with your mates checking out the scenery and the fantastic country hospitality.
- You’ve wanted to drag out that old car and have a go at a charity rally.
- You like challenging driving, great camaraderie and making new friends.
- You’d love to stand around a campfire with a cold tinnie and have a yarn with your mates.
- You’d like to put something back into the community by raising money for a good cause, but you’d like to do it in a fun way.
We have purposely planned an event that has the flexibility to do a lot of things the other events can't. All this is done with the security of a full support crew including medics, mobile mechanical workshops and communication experts. With a maximum of 50 cars, we can go to the smaller communities and the more remote places that the bigger events have to bypass. This means you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you can’t get elsewhere. It’s an event designed as a reward for fundraising and we go to great lengths to make it fun, challenging and interesting. Read More
The Route.....
Bourke is characterised as the place where the bitumen ends and the outback starts - seems an appropriate place to start the 2011 Tour de Kangaroo. Our first day will take us across the Queensland border and to a night of station living at our overnight stop at Thyangra Station, just south of Thargomindah. Day two sees us heading for the small town of Windorah with lunch by the Wilson River at Mt. Margaret Station. Day three means that we are travelling towards Longreach and a good layday. We'll overnight at the Wellshot Hotel in Ilfracombe before heading into Longreach and the Stockmans Hall of Fame and the Qantas Museum on our layday, day four. Day five takes us towards the Blue Heeler Hotel at Kynuna. Before that we will check out the Dinosaur Footsteps at Lark Quarry and the artifacts in 'Waltzing Matilda' country. After Kynuna we'll head towards the coast and the next overnight stop in the 'fossil town' of Hughendon. Day seven sees us heading north to our next overnight stop at the Undarra Lava Lodge. Our final day on the road will take us through the Valley of Lagoons onto the final dinner dinner location at Castaways Resort in Mission Beach.
Each day is planned to have a number of events to keep things interesting. As well as the tourist sites listed, we have a daily driving challenge which could vary from a 'rough & tough' track for 20-30 kms to a motorkhana or similar. Most of the time the emphasis is on 5 million star accommodation ie camping, but either at the site or within a short distance there will be motel/hotel/cabin accommodation available. Three fine country meals a day provided by I.C.P.A. or CWA or other service clubs will sustain you as we head towards Mission Beach.
Distance is estimated at around 3500kms and rarely will the daily distance exceed 400kms.
